Our Son Has a Dollar He Will Never Spend

I read Jim Dodson's June 25 column about a visit with Arnold Palmer with much enjoyment!

I am reminded of an incident in my young son's life and meeting Mr. Palmer at Winged Foot. I believe he was there before the first Senior U.S. Open. I am a longtime member at Winged Foot and an ex-Pinehurst resident before Caroline and I relocated to Pawleys Island.

Dave Jr. could not have been more than 5 or 6, but I pointed out a graying but still strong Arnold Palmer on the range, practically alone. Dave went and asked him for an autograph, without any prodding, but failed to bring any paper.

Palmer was kind enough to provide an old dollar bill. He wrote a short message about what a pleasure it was to meet him, and gave it to my now-stunned son! Dave had never had a dollar of his own and now he had one he could never spend!

At 35, he still has the dollar. We enjoyed reading and rereading about Palmer. He is a prince, and I doubt we'll see another quite like him.

Keep well, Mr. Dodson.
