Thanks to Dodson

Thank you, Jim Dodson, for sharing these very personal memories in the June 25 column.

Just a little story here from me. I briefly met Arnold Palmer back in 1975 when he was in Pinehurst to play in the World Open.

My mother had just moved to Pinehurst, and I was here to visit her. She sat me down next to Bob Drum, of all people, at the bar of the Member's Club. What an experience for me (as you can imagine).

I had no real knowledge of Arnold or golf until that day. I followed him and the game from then on, and I was always interested in the woman behind the legend.

Years later, when our family got a sheltie, our kennel name for her was Arnold's Winny Palmer. We called her Winny. She was a wonderful dog. It probably sounds a bit strange to you, naming our dog after her, but I always figured she was the lovely upstanding woman you described. I just wanted you to know how much I liked your column about her and why.

Keep the stories coming.
