Mrs. Johnston requested a private burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Southern Pines.
Mrs. Johnston was born July 19, 1926, in Boston, Mass., the daughter of the late George Clifford Moore Jr. and the late Dorothy Copeland Moore. She grew up in Southern Pines where she attended The Arc School and Southern Pines High School. She was a varsity tennis player and an avid equestrian.
Following her attendance at St. Mary's School in Raleigh and Garland Finishing School in Boston, Mass., Mrs. Johnston married former FBI Agent and late Fayetteville attorney, William (Bill) T. Johnston, who pre-deceased her in 1973. She was a long-time resident of Fayetteville, moving to Johnson City in November of 1999, to be near her son and daughter and their families.
Mrs. Johnston was a long-time member of St. John's Episcopal and Holy Trinity Episcopal Churches in Fayetteville where she served on the Altar Guilds for many years. She was a volunteer with Highsmith and Cape Fear Valley Hospitals in Fayetteville, an active member for years in Cross Creek Garden Club, and a member of "The Tuesday Night Ladies Group," during her years in Fayetteville. She was a lifelong advocate for animals and the environment, donating to the Humane Society, the National Wildlife Federation, local animal shelters, and many environmental groups.
"Mrs. Johnston loved her dogs, Addie and Harley, and her cat Marty-Charlie," said a family member.
Mrs. Johnston was preceded in death by her brother, George C. Moore III.
Mrs. Johnston is survived by a sister, Dorothy Moore Cash, of Southern Pines.
Other survivors include her son, William "Bill" T. Johnston Jr. and his wife, Deb, of Johnson City, Tenn.; her daughters, Janine Johnston Wilson and her husband, Dean, of Johnson City, Tenn., Jane Johnston Nuzum and her husband, Robert, of Venice, Fla., Kim Johnston Brandl and her husband, Jeff, of Lake Zurich, Ill., and Tracey Johnston Alfero and her husband, Tony, of Plantation, Fla.; her grandchildren, Ashley Dean Wilson and his wife, Tracy, Ryan George Wilson, Robert Scott Nuzum, Kirk A. Nuzum, William Coy Nuzum, Russell Eisenbarth and his wife, Ania, Margaret and Nicholas Eisenbarth, Alexandra Brandl, Kelsey Elizabeth, Jarett and Tori Alfero; and one great-granddaughter, Avery Haas.
Also surviving is Mrs. Johnston’s companion of 21 years, Maj. (Ret.) Charles LePors, formerly of Fayetteville and Ft. Bragg, of Johnson City, Tenn.
