Mayo B. Dotson

Mayo Beaty Dotson, 96, died Wednesday, June 28, at Penick Village in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Wise, Va., with the Rev. Robert Layell officiating. Interment will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va.

A second memorial service will be conducted at the Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Mrs. Dotson was born in Wise, Va., on Oct. 27, 1909, to the late Mary Flanary Beaty and John Morton Beaty. She attended Hollins and Longwood Colleges in Virginia.

She taught school and then married her lifelong sweetheart, Bernard Earl (Buddy) Dotson. They were married for 66 years before his death in 2001.

"During lengthy pastorates at Mount Olive Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church, Carthage, Buddy did the preaching and Mayo did the practicing," said a family spokesman. "Later she invited many to attend Brownson, if they did not have a church of their own."

Mrs. Dotson was active in campaigning for and supporting the N.C. Symphony in Moore County and the FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital Foundation. She did volunteer work at the hospital and served meals at the Shaw House and was a Weymouth supporter and volunteer. Her favorite golf group was the Rainmakers.

She is survived by her daughter, the Rev. Molly Dotson Morgan and her husband, Pat, of Reidsville; sons, Bernard Earl Dotson Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., and Thomas Young Dotson of Southern Pines; grandsons, Melzer Adron Morgan III and his wife, Kristi, and Patrick Earl Morgan and his wife, Elizabeth; and great-grandchildren, Lily Reva Morgan, Melzer Adron Morgan IV and IIiana Rose Morgan.

Sturgill Funeral Homes in Wise, Va., is handling arrangements for the family.
