With an early start to the peach season, North Carolina growers have countless varieties available throughout the state.
Peaches have been arriving at farmers markets since the end of May, about a week earlier than usual. The five-month peach season officially lasts from June through early October, with different varieties throughout the season. Growers are estimated to have yielded 6,000 tons of peaches in 2005, with $5.1 million in sales.
"North Carolina farmers grow more than 70 varieties of peaches," said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. "Many of our farmers plant more than one variety, giving consumers the opportunity to sample a small portion of our state's agricultural diversity."
Clingstone peaches are available now through the beginning of July, and freestone varieties will be available shortly. Gala, White Lady, Red Haven, Cary Mac, Sun Prince, Harvester, Jim Dandee, Sugar Lady, Topaz, Glencoe, Century, Sugar May, Ruby Prince and Ruby Red are among the varieties available now.
To celebrate the peach-growing season, the following events are planned across the state:
-- July 14 – Peach Day at the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market, Colfax
-- July 15 – Peach Festival, Candor
-- July 22 – Peach Day at the Southeastern N.C. Farmers Market, Lumberton
-- July 27 – Peach Day at the State Farmers Market, Raleigh.
