The Moore Humane Society (MHS) set up shop on the grassy strip near the entrance to the center. Dogs, cats, kittens and puppies hoping to be adopted were on display beneath a colorful red, canopy tent.
"This was a new off-site adoption location for us and it was great," says Jeanne Orlando, treasurer and board member of the Moore Humane Society. "We had wonderful support from some sponsors, and best of all, were able to place a number of animals in new homes. Being at a place like this really helps us get the kind of visibility the animals need to be seen and have a chance to be adopted."
The Clothes Horse provided informal modeling for the Adoption Event. The upscale women's clothing store also runs an ongoing promotion: with any $20 donation to MHS, The Clothes Horse offers 20 percent any item in its store.
Likewise, the Cook's Choice came up with an incentive for people to get involved. With a donation to MHS, the specialty store offered a Cuisinart Electric Wok valued at $150 that was raffled off. A woman from Pinehurst walked away with the valuable edition to her kitchen at the end of the day.
The Fresh Market donated sandwiches and bottled water for all the MHS staff and volunteers. Colonel Bob Adams. MHS Board member and radio personality, was on hand to broadcast live for WIOZ radio.
"We are so grateful to all the individuals and businesses in our community who take such an interest in trying to help the animals," Orlando says. "This time of year there are so many stray puppies and kittens being born, it's hard to keep up with the demand. In fact, June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat month for just that reason."
MHS is the only animal welfare organization in Moore County that operates a privately funded, full-time shelter and practices "no-kill" philosophies. It is on N.C. 22 near U.S. 15-501 in Carthage.
The adoption fee for any MHS animal is $75 and that covers all spay and neutering costs, shots and any necessary medical care.
