PILOT LIGHT: Fireworks Displays To Light Up Fourth

Independence Day observers will enjoy fireworks displays in six municipalities and unincorporated communities.

At a June meeting, the Moore County Board of Commissioners adopted resolutions granting five applications for Fourth of July fireworks displays and one for the Farmers Day celebration in Robbins in August. In May, the commissioners granted a permit to Woodlake Country Club for its Independence Day celebration on July 3.

Aberdeen requested a permit for a fireworks display to be featured during its traditional celebration on July 4. If it rains, the alternate date is July 5.

The village of Pinehurst received a permit for its annual July 4 event, also with a July 5 rain date.

Others receiving permits were Country Club of North Carolina for July 4, with July 5 rain date; Seven Lakes Landowners Association for July 4, with July 5 and July 6 as alternate dates; and Seven Lakes West for July 4, with no alternate rain date specified.

Robbins Fire Department will host Farmers Day on the first weekend in August. The fireworks display is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 4, with an Aug. 5 rain date.

JULY MEETING -- The Moore County Board of Commissioners has canceled its first regular meeting in July because of the Independence Day holiday.

Instead, the board will hold one meeting in July, the regular night meeting on Monday, July 17. The board also approved that change along with several others at a June meeting.

Other changes in the meeting schedule for the new fiscal year include cancellation of the Dec. 18 meeting. Meeting date changes will affect the schedule on weeks in which a legal holiday falls on a Monday, such as Labor Day and the Martin Luther King Jr. observance. In those cases the meeting is postponed until the Tuesday after the holiday.

One other change will affect the budget preparation schedule next year. In that case, the board will meet on the regular date, the first Monday in June, but at 6 p.m., rather than the usual 2 p.m.

O'NEAL -- The O'Neal Schools' women's soccer team has not only won a state title, the Falcons are being honored in the nation's capital these days.

U.S. Rep Howard Coble, a Greensboro Republican who represents Moore County, honored the victorious women's soccer team in a congratulatory statement in the Congressional Record -- the official journal of the House and Senate proceedings.

On June 13, Coble wrote, "I am pleased to report that public high schools in the Sixth District of North Carolina are not the only ones housing state championships these days. Now O'Neal School in Moore Country, North Carolina, is able to sit in the same seat of glory having won the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association 2A conference competition in women's Cooper.

"The Falcons endured fierce competition in the pursuit of their ultimate goal battling through two overtimes (one in the quarter finals and the other in the semi-finals). The fact that the road which they traveled to victory was so rocky made the end result all the more sweet. The women beat out their rival, Calvary Baptist Day School, 1-0 in the final game of the championship.

"Freshman Syd Mcllwain made everyone proud with the excessive determination required for a defender to score the only goal of the game. The goal occurred on a corner kick in which sweeper Caroline Cordell kicked it perfectly for McIlwain to head it in.

"We are pleased to recognize all members of the O'Neal School soccer team who contributed to this nearly perfect championship season. Members of the team include Alex Allen, Carey Averbook, Kristin Black, Caroline Cordell, Margaret Cross, Cate Dahl, Kathryn Davis, Jessica Gregory, Sarah Griffin, Kelsey Hukee, Meagan Johnson, Kate King, Lauren Krahnert, Kathryn Maples, Syd McIlwain, Anna Post, Nicole Poteat, Kate St. John, Allaire Welk, and Stephanie White.

"The women's outstanding record was achieved largely due to their ability to work together on and off the field. Responsibility for this close bond rests in the hands of Head Coach Kyle Kegl and Assistant Coach Jason Byrd whose hard work throughout the season was imitated by the players cumulating in ultimate victory among private schools at the state level.

"On behalf of the citizens of the Sixth District of North Carolina, we congratulate the O'Neal Falcons for completing their first-ever state championship and doing so with only one loss the entire year. Congratulations to Headmaster John Neiswender, Athletic Director Steve Dahl, the teachers, staff, students, parents, and fans for bringing home a state championship to our community."
