Fairway Notebook: Joe Matejka Scores Ace

Hole-In-One: Joe Matejka, a member of Whispering Woods, aced the 140-yard, 11th hole, using his 5-iron on June 7. His playing partners were Joe Haas, Jim Dashner and Steve Luckhaus.

Whispering Woods: The Men's Golf Association played a low net game June 14.The winners were John Hamm, Ray Libbey and Tom Rittenhouse, 53; and Rich Moran, Bill Crump, Carl Williams and Don Schmidt, 54.

On June 16, the game was one best ball on the front and two on the back. The winners were Tom Rittenhouse, Don Schmidt, Ken Pomeroy and Dick Cosgrove, 80; and Jim Manninen, Ray Libbey, George May and Bill Crump, 88.

Rich Moran, Al Eisold, Joe Haas and Don Schmidt scored 270 to win the low net foursome contest on June 19. Bill Blades, Gaylord Maines, John Hamm and Paul Curl had 277.

The Ladies Golf Association played a Flag Day tournament with the following players planting their flag on the fairway or green. The 18th fairway winners were Brenda Kirk, Mary Pat Curl and Mary Ella Miller.

The Couples played in a two-best-ball event June 16. The winners were Eloise and Jim Willard with Rosalie and Joe Pepe at 125. Nancy and Al Eisold with Gerry and Phil Scalia had 127.

Seven Lakes: The nine-hole Lakers played its monthly Cordial Cup/low putts competition with Dot Baetzhold winning the Cordial Cup at net 31 and Peg Berngartt carding 15 putts.

Flight winners were:

Flight 1 — Marion Donnelly, 35; Mary Ellen Lorion, 38.

Flight 2 — Nancy Blythe, 33; Gerry Sullivan, 38 in a match of cards with Doris Miller.

On June 21, the Lakers and the 18-Hole Women's Golf Association played a Friendship Day Tournament. One best ball was needed on par-5s, two on par-4s and three on par 3s. Connie Galford, Vi Self, Sally Kindsvatter and Evie Launhardt had a 53. Peg Hart, Jule Thornton, Carol Jackson and Judy Collins had a 54.

Beacon Ridge: On June 6, the Ladies Golf Association played for the Beacon Cup. Joyce Loney won with net 66. Flight winners were:

Flight 1 — Barbara Card, 70; Gloria Stanley, 74; LaVonne Hurd, 77.

Flight 2 — Lois Owen, 67; Sandra McDermott, 70; Mary Anne Foley, 73 in a match of cards with Sandra Easter.

Flight 3 — Linda Downing, 68; Ann Doster, 69; Marilyn Holzerland, 79.

Knollwood: The Sandblasters played a contest using two best balls of the foursome. Ron Flock, Charles Childers, Glen Kendall and Dick Heilman took first place with a 54 in match of cards with Bill Moore, Dick Kelley, Phil Colwell, and a blind draw; and Paul Sanger, Jim Taylor, Len Grasso and Don Green.

Bill Moore had the best gross score at 35. Birdies were recorded by Bob Edwards and Joe Reilly on No. 1, Jim Taylor on No. 1 and 5, and Ron Flock on No. 9.

On June 13, the game was a captain’s choice with the following winners: Paul Sanger, Paul Aschmetat, Paul Cottam and Joe Alden, 32; Bill Crenson, Mac Andrews, James Burrill and Dick Heilman, 33; and Bill Moore, Tom Delehaunty, Doug Toler and Phil Colwell, 34.

The Rainmakers held a team play format June 19 with the following winners: Barbara Floore, Dottie Harper and Jane Morgan, 82 in a match of cards with Dot Burtis, Gloria Fisher, Doris Hoffmann and Linda Piechota; Carol Millard, Pat Taylor, Alberta Settzo and Virginia Grasso, 83; and Carolyn Crenson, Barbara Farr, Alice Gilbert and Shirley Ross, 84.

Barbara Floore chipped in on No. 8, Ellie Heron on No. 5 and Liz Garner on No. 4. Penny Higgins had a chip-in birdie on No. 9. Donna McKenzie birdied No. 1.

Foxfire: The Ladies Golf Association hosted the women of Matchmakers on June 13 on the West Course.

Flight winners are as follows:

Flight 1 — Gross: Sandy Gross, Deercroft, 85. Net: Jaunita McCleney, Foxfire, 73 in match of cards with Dottie Guckin, Longleaf.

Flight 3 — Gross: Carol Gaskill, Deercroft, 93. Net: Ann Nueslein, Beacon Ridge, 69; Betsy Brezinski, Beacon Ridge, 71 in a match of cards with Susan Cannata, Deercroft.

Flight 4 — Gross: Lois Owen, Beacon Ridge, 100. Net: Pam Jones, Woodlake, 72; Joette MacNichol, Foxfire, 74.

Flight 7 — Gross: Gerda Pittenger, Midland 107. Pat Durling, Deercroft, 72 in a match of cards with Cherie Shiels, Woodlake, and Wanda Parker, Woodlake; and Marilyn Holzelland, Beacon Ridge, 77.

The Ladies Golf Association played the East Course on June 21 in a contest using three best balls of the threesomes. The winning teams were: Pat Bryan, Jean Brown and Anne Walsh, 61 by a match of cards with Betty Gregory, Bertha Christman and a blind draw, and Lucille Cardelle, Sue Bachelder and Judy Dickerson.

The Foxy Niners hosted the Sandy Nine clubs on June 20. The format was two best balls of the foursome on the front nine of the East Course. The winners were Sally Terrutty of Beacon Ridge, Wanda Parker of Woodlake, Sook Shin of Woodlake, Evie Lounhardt of Seven Lakes, 58 in a match of cards over Mary Jakucyk of Whispering Pines, Peggy Crew of Knollwood, Ellen Smith of Seven Lakes, Gladys Knight of Foxfire.

The Ladies Golf Association held its annual member-guest tournament with a "Taste of the Grape" theme on June 16.

Gross winners were Karen Wheeler, Foxfire, Isabelle Daley, Whispering Pines, Barbara Price, Foxfire, Dottie Guckin, Longleaf, 67. Pinehurst: The Women's Golf Association played a game in which each player could rack up as many points as she could in a Stableford format on Course No. 5. Anne Culwick, Betty Palmer, Helen Brissette and Estelle Menke were first with an 81. Davida Jadlos, Helen Wainwright, Tonya Brown, Ilse Roberts were second with a 75 in a match of cards with Dolores Muller, Mary Wardrop, Susan Marentette and Olive Muiter.

Bonnie Hanly, Billie Oxrieder, Cheri Guidice and Julie Polk were fourth with a 73. Peggy Lucey, Margaret Van Riper, Joann Breslin and Linda Querec were fifth with 72. Lisa Carothers, Carol Mulcahy, June Eichele and Mary Ann Mills were sixth at 71.

Jeanne Anderson, Marianne Regler, Josie Bunting and Nancy Cassidy were seventh with a 70. Bette Rycroft, Marie Schneider, Cathy Renner and Diana Staley were eighth with a 69 in a match of cards with Sandy Edens, Lynne Heilman, Ginny Lapins and Sis Liston and Joan Hiner, Penny Warters, Jean Funderburg and Joyce Harter.
